Goat Rodeo

There is a short window of opportunity to photograph mountain goats in Colorado.

The window begins when babies (kids) are born about mid-June and are “presented” to the world about a week later. They are cute, carefree, adventurous, mischievous, and a joy to watch and photograph.

The mothers, called nannies, maintain careful watch and protection of their newborns. Several nannies will group together with their young and share child responsibilities in a “nursery”.

King of the Rock

The photographic window begins to close when the nannies begin to moult. They begin to shed their thick winter coats and, as a result, become less photogenic. The moulting begins in late June to early July. That means one has only about 2-3 weeks of newborn kids and nannies with thick, attractive, white wooly coats to photograph.

Mother Love

We were fortunate to find and photograph nannies and their kids on Mount Evans, Idaho Springs, Colorado in mid-June. We estimate that the babies were about 1-2 weeks old and a joy to photograph. I hope that you enjoy viewing them as much as I did photographing them.

Kid Stuff Video

Kids Stuff – three one-to-two week old infant mountain goats (kids) romp and do rough play to see who can claim to be king of the rock.  A nanny mother goat comes over to scold them as they retreat and calm down. Mount Evans, Idaho Springs, Colorado.
